How does Loki determine my location?

Loki uses Skyhook Wireless Wi-Fi Positioning System to determine your location. Read more on how it works here.

Do I need to have Wi-Fi on my laptop or desktop for Loki to work?

For Loki to triangulate your location it requires a wireless adapter to be on your machine and enabled. If a wireless adapter is not found or it is disabled Loki will determine your location using your IP. IP Geolocation will try to determine what city you are in based on your ISP's IP address. You can learn more about IP Geolocation by going here.

Do I have to be connected to a Wi-Fi access point?

No, you do not actually need to be connected to the internet over Wi-Fi for Loki to work. Loki does require a net connection and an enabled wireless adapter on the laptop or desktop in order to work, but you can connect to the internet over ethernet.

I get a "Location cannot be determined" error. What can I do?

When you receive this error it means that Loki scanned for nearby access points but didn't recognize any of them and was unable to determine your location. This typically means you are outside of the Skyhook coverage area, which you can check on a map here. Skyhook offers the ability for a user to submit nearby MAC addresses to their system so that you can add coverage for your location. Just go to the Submit AP Form and submit the access points that are around you. There are detailed instructions on that page to help guide you along.

Loki determined my location, but it's not where I actually am. What can I do?

This typically means that your access point has an old location in the Skyhook database. You can update your access point's location using the Submit AP Form on Skyhook's website.

How do I uninstall Loki?

The Loki Plugin can be uninstalled using two methods. The method used depends on the user's operating system. If the user has Windows, the plugin can be uninstalled using the Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel. If the user has an Apple OSX machine, the program is uninstalled by moving \Library\Internet Plug-Ins\loki.plugin to the Trash.

The users settings (Windows Registry, MAC PList) will not be removed during the uninstall process. Also, the Windows directory '\Program Files\Skyhook Wireless' will not be removed during the uninstall process. The plugin should be removed from any plugin, program, or extension list.
